Jonathan Olley: Castles Of Ulster

A Photo Essay by Jonathan Olley on Military Structures in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

RUC and Military buildings that formed part of the British Army's defensive strategy to control the landscape and people of Northern Ireland. These photographs were made between 1997 - 2000, in response to the Good Friday Agreement clause that required the removal of these classified military structures.


  1. These are extraordinary buildings. The contrast between their utterly mundane surroundings and paranoid, science-fiction appearance makes them look like nothing else.
